The structured light scanning system is based on the excellent, low cost David-laserscanner software. Twelve or more individual scans, taken from different directions, are aligned, cleaned up, and fused into a single watertight mesh. The time necessary to capture a complete set of scans is about 1 minute. Most people are able to hold still well enough and control their breathing adequately during the process.
The home-made 3D scanning hardware consists of the following components:
Imagingsource usb camera (1024×768) with a 6mm Panasonic manual lens,
LG projector (1024×768),
aluminum extrusion support rail, a tripod,
home-made turntable with DC motor, belt-drive, gears, Arduino controller with motor shield, DC power supply, magnetic switch for indexing rotation position.
